Sudan to Valle del Cauca :: Along the heavily forested border of Sudan and Ethiopia, coffee emerged as a source of energy for ancient goat herders, monks, and eventually the world. Likely, one of the varieties that fueled coffees' rise to prominence for mankind was  Sudan Rume.

This is one of the hardest to find of all heirloom varieties, but this year we reconnected with Rigoberto Herrera at Granja la Esperanze and one of the varietals amongst his impressive collection of exotic coffees was Sudan Rume! It's like tasting history and the future at the same time - these ancient heirlooms make us realize how coffee tasted in its infancy (would it have become popular if it tasted like F*lgers?), and what was lost in the rush to commoditize the industry. Yet, at the same time, it gives a hopeful vision of the vibrant future of coffee; particularly poetic when coming from a farm named "Hope."

Tasting Notes: This is a very vibrant coffee, with intensity that matches other heirlooms such as Geisha and Sidra, but a profile with sweet exotic spice and punchy fruits.

Washed: Pomelo Grapefruit, Mulberry, and Ginger

Natural: Elderberry, Mulberry, and Mint Julep
